Abbey's Thoughts on Bean Bags

Posted April 9, 2013

This letter was sent to us from a guest poster.  This is her personal experiences.

When I want to fill a room with a little bit of youthful whimsy, the first thing that comes to mind is the type of furniture I can put in place to make my rooms feel cozy and young in style. Immediately bean bag chairs come strike my fancy, as they come in a huge variety of textures, colors, and sizes to satisfy any design I want, and they are easy to move around the whole house at the same time! With chairs made out of bean bags, I can have a new look in my living or family room whenever I want, then simply move them to other rooms as needed.

Bean bag chairs have grown in size and style over the last several years. They come in faux leather, silky suede, and even pom-pom fluffy material that makes it feel like you're lying in a giant stuffed animal. From bright neon to polka dots to more classy styles like shiny black or even demin, the old school bean bag isn't just for lounging in front of the TV anymore. Today, they can be as large and as long as a couch, and so comfortable it makes me wonder why I even have any other type of furniture in my house!

What I love about bean bags is that they are filled with durable filler that forms to the body and is resistent to compression. While traditional bean bags for play are commonly filled with dried beans (remember those, the little baggies that you toss around like in cornhole games?), a bean bag chair is actually filled with polystyrene beads. Polystyrene beads are both durable and super comfortable as a filler, and are made from either recycled plastic materials or a 'virgin' plastic. Either way, polystyrene makes for a super light-weight piece of furniture that keeps its shape and comfort no matter how many times it's sat on or moved. This is a huge relief for me, because I like to move my bean bag chairs all around my house as they are needed.

These type of chairs are amazing to have on hand, particularly if you have young kids or teenagers, like I do. Often, kids just like to sit on the floor, but having a bean bag chair handy gives the kiddos a comfortable place to sit down and play video games, chat with family, or (wishful thinking here), do their homework. I love having a bean bag chair in the corner of my living and family rooms, so I don't have to take up tons of space but can have a chair ready for extra company just in case I need it. The dogs like these chairs too, but only when we're not looking.

Adding a bean bag chair to the home or dorm room is a great way to add comfortable living and youthful appeal without spending a lot of money or taking up a ton of space. I know for a thrifty person like myself who has a large family but not tons of space, having a bean bag chair on hand is a great way to create room whenever I need it. Plus, having a beanbag chair around just feels cool, and really adds some fun to my house.

Thanks to Abbey for this guest post.  We're happy you are a fan of bean bags!
