AHH Spot Bean Bag Chairs
NFPA 701 Standard

ahhhh...that spot's safe!

On occasion, we may offer bean bag chairs with covers that are "FR", or Flame Retardant.  This means that the particular fabric used for the cover has passed the NFPA 701 test for flame retardancy.  All of our bean bag chairs meet or exceed U.S. flammability standards, so no worries there.  But, if you need something with an extra bit of flame retardancy, you can choose a bean bag with a cover that is "FR".  You'll find the "FR" label in the detailed description of the bean bag chair.

Our Kinetic Energy Plum bean bag chair has a cover made from "FR" fabric.

About NFPA 701:

NFPA stands for the National Fire Protection Association.  NFPA 701 is the "Standard Methods of Fire Tests for Flame Propagation of Textiles and Films".  NFPA 701 tests fabric by burning a small sample and measuring the flame, char length, and flaming residue.  If a fabric meets the NFPA 701 standards in these three areas, the fabric is considered flame retardant, and can be labeled "FR".

NFPA 701 is a standard normally applied to drapery for use in public places, since this can be a hazardous application.  Still, it gives you a good idea of the extra flame retardancy a bean bag chair cover has if it is made from a fabric that is certified as "FR".

NFPA 701 measures the flammability of a fabric when it is exposed to specific sources of ignition.  NFPA 701 testing measures the ignition resistance of a fabric after it is exposed to a flame for 12 seconds. The flame, char length, and flaming residue are recorded. The fabric passes if all samples meet this criteria:

  1. An after-flame of less than 2.0 seconds
  2. a char length of less than 6.5 inches
  3. the sample does not continue to flame after reaching the floor of the test chamber

Fabric certified as "FR", or flame retardant, is certified to have been tested and passed the NFPA 701 test.
